Supporting Resilience and Autonomy in Teens

Hello Bay Community, Recently the Counseling Department hosted a presentation on supporting resilience and autonomy on teens- two very crucial characteristics to reinforce for healthy maturation in our young people. Also very difficult to support when fear and anxiety get in the way! For parents, the dilemma can come from wanting to see teens taking opportunities to exercise independence AND fearing that they may not be able to recover if things go awry. A particularly valid dilemma when the stakes may feel too great to allow for natural consequences. And yet, study after study shows that resilience and autonomy increase when we have opportunities to explore independence and demonstrate our ability to tolerate new or difficult experiences. This Simple Fix Could Help Anxious Kids article by the New York Times highlights the value of “letting teens do more things on their own” in an effort to foster independence and decrease anxiety. The Let it Grow Project has helpful tips for how to increase independence testing with your teens that matches their temperament and developmental stage. For more information on ways to support autonomy, resilience and independence in teens, here is the link to our recent presentation- Autonomy and Resilience Presentation For more help in this area, please visit one of us in the counseling department. We would be more than happy to think through this problem with you! Take care of yourselves and each other, Suzanne, Christina and Tessa Bay School Counseling Team
